Like sister model the L19, the Coolpix L20 is a basic budget camera with bare bonus point-and-shoot functionality in an understated body. You do get a 3.6x zoom lens (covering a rather nonedescript 38-136mm range) and a handful of new gadgets designed to provide true point-and-shoot ease of use (including Auto Scene Selector, Smile Mode and Blink Detection) and a 3.0" screen.
A variety of advanced functions simplifies picture-taking. Activated in Easy Auto Mode, Nikon's Scene Auto Selector makes capturing special moments as easy as turning on the camera and shooting without worrying about any settings. The handy functions of Nikon's Smart Portrait System aids in beautifully capturing precious smiles. Motion Detection, Nikon's BSS (Best Shot Selector) function and ISO 1600 capability help ensure sharper results in lower light, or when capturing fast-moving subjects.

The Nikon Coolpix L20 couples a ten effective megapixel image sensor with a Nikkor-branded 3.6x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a rather tight 38mm wide angle to a 136mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.1 to f/6.7 across the zoom range. There's no true mechanical image stabilization on this model, but the Nikon L20 does have the ability to vary its sensitivity automatically from a minimum of ISO 64 to a maximum of ISO 1600 equivalent - so it should be able to freeze camera shake and subject motion at the expense of some image noise.

Automatically detecting as many as 12 faces in the shot, Face-priority AF helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Mode helps to faithfully record precious moments by automatically releasing the shutter when the subject smiles. Blink Warning displays an alert when it suspects that a subject has blinked. Now featuring faster processing speed, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.
